For almost twelve years now – the motif in Sven Ochsenreither’s pictures are children. But as his paintings have developed in form – the children have changed from kids engrossed in play to confident young actors. The figures are still child-like, but they don’t fulfill the cliché
of the misty-eyed child. Instead he uses his young protagonists to create archetypal images. In his latest paintings the children’s faces are mystically and wondrously illuminated, while other parts stay in colourful darkness. Ochsenreither envisions an artificial universe in form and content – he creates a world with its own rules, its own history and its own memories. In this reality familiar objects are combined with familiar situations, connecting in new and astounding ways.
Francis Mutton, May 2015
